A cactus plant replaces flowers in the Abbey church during Lent. The cactus reminds us of the 40 days Jesus spent in the desert. A simple cross also replaces the more ornate one used during the rest of the year.

It was held the day before Ash Wednesday which begins the season of Lent.
Three Canadians attended a workshop at Saint Bernard’s Abbey in Cullman, Alabama.
There were 65 abbots and prioresses present. Sister Barbara of Nanaimo is on the
right and Sister Virginia of Winnipeg is on the left.
