Remembering Abbot Peter Novecosky, OSB
Abbot Peter Novecosky, OSB, 79, died August 14, 2024. The
fifth Abbot of St. Peter’s Abbey, Fr. Peter succeeded Abbot Jerome Weber in 1990.
Born in Humboldt to Martin and Elizabeth Novecosky, Fr. Peter
was the youngest child of a family of eight. He attended Willow Ridge School in the Burr and St. Scholastica Church area. He continued his education at St. Peter’s College.
In 1963 he joined St. Peter’s monastic community, making vows in 1964. That fall he continued his education towards the priesthood and was ordained on July 11, 1970.
He held the positions of teacher at the high school, Assistant
Editor of the Prairie Messenger, Manager of St. Peter’s Press, Guest Master, Novice and Junior Master, Sub-prior and Prior of St. Peter’s Abbey and elected Abbot on July 23, 1990.
As Ordinary of the Abbacy, he had the responsibility for this
extra-diocesan territory and participated in various episcopal obligations: attending provincial and national meetings. He was National Spiritual Director of the CWL, KofC State Chaplain,
Secretary of the Western Conference of Catholic Bishops.
For the repose of his soul each priest of our community will
offer three Masses. In the other houses of our congregation he will receive the usual suffrages for deceased confreres.
